In 1874, the town was officially incorporated and changed its name to Carmel. In 1882, the Monon Railway came to Carmel; though the railway shut down in 1974, it is currently being restored by the Carmel-Clay Historical Society. 1914 saw the construction of the Carmel Public Library, and in 1924 one of the United States’ first stop and go traffic lights was installed at Main Street and Range Line Road. Carmel marked its 150th anniversary on April 13, 1987, just a year after the groundbreaking of the new Carmel Civic Square, the current home of Carmel’s government. The 1990’s saw lots of growth in the burgeoning suburb, including the opening of the Carmel Parks and Recreation Department, Flowing Well Park, an award winning Wastewater Treatment facility, the City Farmer’s Market, and the River Road Greenway [10].
