Canal & White River State Park Indianapolis Indiana

Eiteljorg Museum Indianapolis IndianaIn the 1980's, the Central Canal was refurbished as a recreational area in the style of Venetian canals.  In the 90's, cultural attractions were built along it.  Now it boasts a limestone walkway, a jaw-dropping view of the Downtown skyline, unique cafes, attractions, and festival space.  The Canal Walk is scattered with pedal boats and gondolas in the summer, and is perfect for those wanting a casual stroll and those who are looking for a good place to bike or run.

Canal tours are offered by the Historic Landmarks Foundation for those interested in knowing the Canal's history.  In 1996, the Canal was extended into the White River State Park.  The Lawn at this park presents a unique setting for outdoor concerts.  Alongside the Canal is another outdoor favorite - the baseball games at Victory Field.  This Ballpark has been named by both Sports Illustrated and Baseball America as the "Best Minor League Ballpark in America."  Another outdoor activity along the Canal are the Indianapolis Zoo - the only zoo in the nation to be an accredited combined zoo, botanical garden and aquarium.

The Gardens display more than 1,000 plant species and the only underwater dolphin viewing experience in the world, the Dolphin Adventure, lies here.  Indoors, there is the Indiana History Center, The Indiana State Museum, and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, and the NCAA Hall of Champions.  The State Museum houses both the L.S. Ayres Tea Room and the IMAX Theater.  The Eiteljorg Museum houses the Sky City Cafe, as well as a three-acre garden that actually connects to the Canal.  The Canal's north end is also home to a state-certified technology park and a commercial life science initiative.
