Hooks American Drugstore Museum Indianapolis Indiana

John Hook opened his first German apothecary in a building on East Street.  In his lifetime, he opened about 50 stores throughout the state of Indiana.  As a gift to the people of Indiana, the company gave the Hooks Historical Drugstore and Pharmacy Museum in 1966.  The museum houses the original cabinets of the first drugstore and even the soda fountain that was opened in 1970.

The museum offers several educational programs.  In "How Medicines Were Made," participants can get a hands-on view of the processes that were used in the 19th century to make medicines by using mortar and pestle and pill rollers, among others.  Hooks American Drugstore Museum Indianapolis IndianaIn the "Curious Encounters" program participants can take an up-close and personal look at the items found in the museum.  In "Soda Fountain Science," learn the history and science behind pop, including Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Rootbeer.  The "Truth in Advertising" program teaches advertising techniques that were used in the past, such as how people were convinced to purchase medicines that claimed to cure everything, but had little effect on ailments.  The "Guided Tour" takes participants through the museum that displays the tools, medicines, and cabinetry from the 1890's era pharmacy - there is an ice cream treat at the end of each tour.

The Museum's address is 1202 East 38th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46205 located on the Indiana State Fairgrounds.  For more information, call 317-924-1503 or visit their website.
