The Indiana State Museum is found in the White River State Park.  This museum explores Indiana’s past, present and future with history, art, science, and culture exhibits that encourage exploration and discovery.  The Museum embraces the values of learning, value, entertainment, community, preservation, authenticity, and leadership in order to preserve, interpret, and present Indiana culture and history.

Inside photo of Indiana State Museum IndianapolisThe Museum’s beginnings are traced back to 1862 when a librarian by the name of R. Deloss Brown began to collect minerals and other artifacts, which a geologist was assigned to label and organize in 1869.  After the Civil War, the collection grew rapidly, and was put on display in the State Capitol building in 1888.  It was moved around frequently until 1945, when many steps were taken to establish a new and modern state museum. However, this fell through due to finances.  In 1962, the first real home of the Museum opened its doors from the recently vacant Indianapolis City Hall.  In 1976, the American Association of Museums awarded the museum with accreditation.  The Museum moved to the White River State Park in 2002, and continues to bring amazing exhibits to Indiana.

Among the exciting exhibits, located within the current Indiana State Museum is Indiana’s only IMAX Theater, the L.S. Ayres Tea Room, Canal Café and Terrace, and two gift shops.  The Museum’s hours* of operation are Monday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The hours will vary on holidays and special event days when traffic is restricted near the museum.  *The IMAX Theater has different hours than the museum.
