The Museum’s beginnings are traced back to 1862 when a librarian by the name of R. Deloss Brown began to collect minerals and other artifacts, which a geologist was assigned to label and organize in 1869. After the Civil War, the collection grew rapidly, and was put on display in the State Capitol building in 1888. It was moved around frequently until 1945, when many steps were taken to establish a new and modern state museum. However, this fell through due to finances. In 1962, the first real home of the Museum opened its doors from the recently vacant Indianapolis City Hall. In 1976, the American Association of Museums awarded the museum with accreditation. The Museum moved to the White River State Park in 2002, and continues to bring amazing exhibits to Indiana.
