The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in performance

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is another example of the vibrant arts community that is available in Central Indiana. One of only 18 year-round professional orchestras in the United States, the ISO performs over 200 concerts a year. They have performed at Carnegie Hall, have completed 3 European tours, and have recorded over 35 albums. Their home is the historic Hilbert Circle Theatre on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis.

Just like most other Indianapolis arts organizations, the Symphony is dedicated to enriching the enjoyment of classical music in the community by providing arts education programs for both children and adults. Their programs for childhood Conductoreducation are unique and varied. One of its most popular is Symphony in Color; a collaboration with the Indianapolis Museum of Art and local elementary schools inviting children to illustrate a piece of music using visual art. The pieces are displayed at the Hilbert Circle and at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and one piece is selected to win the Pacini award and is displayed all year at the Hilbert Circle Theatre. Teenagers and older children go to daytime concerts through school fieldtrips, and participate in the Side-by-Side program, an opportunity for talented youth to play in the orchestra alongside the professional performers.

The Symphony also recognizes that at times, symphonic music can seem inaccessible even to the otherwise culturally conscience. That’s why they also offer enrichment programs for adults. One of these is their Words on Music program that lets audience members meet with artists for a discussion about the piece they are about to see prior to the performance. They also offer Happy Hour at the Symphony, which a post-work social hour with an early start time, so professionals can attend the Thursday evening concerts.

One of the ISO’s most popular events is Symphony on the Prairie, an evening performance at the open air auditorium at Connor Prairie, located in Fishers, Indiana. Guests can spend the day roaming the historic village; then relax for the concert with a picnic or on-site catering provided by Connor Prairie.
