Mud Creek Players in Indianapolis Indiana

The Mud Creek Players offer more than just lively traditional theatre – they have provided their community with more than 50 years of social activism and cultural consciousness. It all began with some friendships formed the 1940s, when gas rationing caused people to seek entertainment closer to home and women were coming together in their communities to sew bandages and blankets for the soldiers.

After the war ended, the women of Mud Creek continued meeting to plan volunteer efforts, and their husbands soon joined them. Shortly thereafter, the group became a social one, and one member suggested they pick out some plays to read aloud to each other while they ate and chatted. Shortly after the first reading, the group organized and produced their first play for the public in 1950. All the proceeds went to the Castleton Volunteer Fire Department.

Throughout the years, the players have produced hundreds of plays AND potluck dinners. They have preserved the Mud Creek River Valley against all those who would threaten it, including the water company and developers. They donate the proceeds from their ticket sales to support organizations like the American Heart Association, Second Helpings, Humane Society of Indianapolis, Butler University MBA Program, Special Olympics of Hancock County, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation – and they manage to do all this while providing extremely low ticket prices for entertaining and well-produced theatre.
