The Phoenix Theatre
Indianapolis, Indiana

Actress on stage at the Phoenix Theatre in Indianapolis IndianaThe Phoenix Theatre has a well-earned reputation for edgy productions that inspire thought and discussion. It is located in the lively Massachusetts Avenue district in a turn-of-the-century church (where Jim Jones once preached) on the corner of St. Clair Street and Park Avenue, and was donated to the theatre by patron J. Scott Keller in 1988. There are two stages at the Phoenix, the Mainstage and the Frank and Katrina Basile Theatre (formerly the Underground.)

Since 1983, the Phoenix has been pushing the boundaries of theatre in Indianapolis.  They are often the first theatre in Indianapolis to produce the controversial shows, from Bugs, a play about drug addicts who think the government has implanted bugs in their skin, to nationally known shows such as The Laramie Project and The Vagina Dialogues.

The Phoenix is a part of the Nation New Play Network, a group that encourages the production of new plays by new playwrights. This dedication to new theatre led them to hosting the Festival of Emerging American Theatre Awards (FEAT). The Phoenix also offers classes for youth and adults, has discount opening week tickets for people with low incomes, and a program called Free Ticket February that offers youth programs and free tickets for teenagers. With their dedication to community involvement and devotion to bringing a heightened awareness of theatre as an art form to the community, the Phoenix is a theatre that is not to be missed.
