History of Downtown Anderson
The
seat of justice was moved to Anderson in 1828 and
was incorporated as a town in 1838. That same year,
the Central Canal came through Anderson – causing a
growth in the population. The town was incorporated
twice more before it finally stuck in 1853. There
were a couple of factors that caused a great
increase in Anderson’s population. The first was
the completion of the Indianapolis Bellefontaine
Railroad that rode through Anderson. Second, the
discovery of natural gas in 1887 brought in several
new industries to Anderson. Today, there is a major
effort to revitalize downtown Anderson.
