American Cabaret Theatre in Indianapolis Indiana

“Rough, tough, and funny” is how the New York Times described the American Cabaret Theatre. With their intimate cabaret-style seating, a 15-year history in the city of Indianapolis, a location in the historic Athenaeum building in the heart of the Mass Ave cultural district, and a cash bar and concessions, ACT is a premier player in the arts scene in central Indiana.

ACT presents a mixture of both original cabaret shows and traditional Broadway musicals, utilizing local talent including graduates from Butler University’s world-renown theatre and dance programs. Athenaeum Building - Home of American Cabaret Theatre in Indianapolis IndianaMany of their shows celebrate cultural icons like Stevie Wonder or Patsy Cline, or iconic periods in music, like disco or divas. The musicals they choose to perform are eclectic, a little risqué, and a lot of fun.

The historic Athenaeum building, the home of ACT, was originally built in 1898 as a German cultural center, designed by Bernhard Vonnegut, the grandfather of Hoosier native and noted novelist Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. The building was renovated in 1990 by the efforts of the American Cabaret Theatre and local businesses, both to save the landmark, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, and to provide a new home for ACT, who relocated to Indianapolis from New York City. It also houses the Rathskeller, a German restaurant with one of the best beer gardens in town.
