Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre

Indianapolis, Indiana

Performance - Gregory Hancock Dance TheatreGregory Hancock Dance Theatre is well-known in Indianapolis for their eclectic, often irreverent, and always thought-provoking performances. They combine a wide array of dance styles with elements of theatre and artistic costumes and scenery to create stunning performances. They were established in 1998 and produce five to six shows throughout their season. Most of their shows are held at the Pike Performing Arts Center in Indianapolis, however many of their shows are performed at different venues, including churches and their own rehearsal space.

One of the unique things about Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre is their commitment to bringing performances to the public that are not only beautiful, but thought-provoking as well. Part of their mission is to perform pieces that raise awareness about issues that are divisive, and to unite people through their art. They are also unique in that Gregory Hancock, founder and Artistic Director, choreographs all of their pieces himself.

Some of the pieces Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre have done include a dark Goth version of Alice inTwo dancers from Gregory Hancock dance theatre Wonderland for Halloween; Between Heaven & Earth, an exploration of faith; and a dance version of Dracula. In 2006, they were the only US dance company asked to participate in the International Baltic Ballet Festival in Riga, Latvia – a very prestigious honor.

Like most performing arts organizations in Indianapolis, Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre spends much of its time giving back to the community. Every year the company produces their version of the Nutcracker using only student dancers. In the Gregory Hancock rendition, Klara is a homeless orphan whose life is turned upside-down by a broken nutcracker doll. The company also teaches classes twice weekly for a select, invitation-only group of students, and holds a summer dance academy that teaches everything from highland dance to ballet.
