General George Washington first recognized St. Patrick’s Day as a holiday
in and effort to boost morale for the Continental Army and to honor his Irish
soldiers? Well he did – and he did it in Morristown, New Jersey. Though

NJ real estate are struck by its charming allure and unique history –
much of which can still be seen and felt today.
First settled by English Presbyterians, Morristown gained its name from the first royal governor of New Jersey, Lewis Morris. The town rose to a population of 250 by the mid-1700’s and was composed of two churches, two schools, two taverns a courthouse and a few stores – mostly supported by the local mills and surrounding farms. It wasn’t until General George Washington set his sights on Morristown that it began to become more commonly recognized. It was here that General Washington commonly set up camp for the Continental Army. Alexander Hamilton courted and married his wife in Morristown and Benedict Arnold was first court-martialed for profiting from military supplies in Philadelphia. Many years later and after the Revolutionary War, Alfred Vail and Samuel F.B. Morse first developed the telegraph machine on January 6, 1838 – its first message read, “A patient waiter is no loser.”
Today Morristown hosts many prominent and notable figures. Professional athletes like hockey goalie Martin Brodeur, tennis player Justin Gimelstop and one time NFL tight end Dave Moore all call Morristown home. The northern New Jersey city has also been the hometown to notable individuals as well including author and poet Dorothy Parker and Academy Award winning Linda Hunt. Much of the attraction to Morristown must be attributed to its close proximity to New York City, as well as its vibrant downtown area with many inviting boutiques to choose from. Residents and visitors alike also enjoy numerous seasonal events and festivals as well as the fresh selections of the local farmer’s market.
No matter what the allure may be, there’s simply no denying that Morristown
