Thinking about Relocating?
Be sure to check out this in-depth resource on Westfield, Indiana to learn all about the city, including major attractions, things to do, events, photos and much more.
Westfield is a mid-sized town located in Hamilton County. It is situated on the north border of Carmel and 20 miles north of downtown Indy.
Westfield, Indiana has a rich heritage that dates all the way back to 1834, when Quakers from North Carolina founded the town. Now you can find diversified neighborhoods, recreational trails and parks systems, industrial parks, regional shopping, and a economic development climate. Westfield will most likely never rival Indianapolis. But maybe that's what locals like most about it, the fact that it has a character all its own, and doesn't strive to be something its not. Folks come to Westfield because it offers a different quality of life, one that can't be found in a large metropolis. Several large corporations call Westfield their home, and many of them are the top employers in the region.
Recently, the city government has been trying to attract more businesses into the community, which is already the home of several corporate headquarters. The pro-business climate in Westfield has begun to pay dividends and more companies move to the Central Indiana town. Much of the business community in Westfield belongs to the Westfield Chamber of Commerce, a government organization that's in charge of the economic development in the city. The main objective of the Chamber is to educate its members on issues that impact Westfield business, which it accomplishes through monthly meetings that generally focus on four areas of Westfield economic development: Current Events, Business Attraction, Business Retention, and Legislative Affairs. Many commercial and industrial development properties are available in Westfield, and its network of fiber optics, utilities, and accessible roadways make owning a business an attractive prospect in Westfield.
Entertainment & Things to Do
Westfield isn't just a successful place to work; it's also a place where residents can have some fun. There's something to do in Westfield for pretty much everybody, be it sports fanatics or nature lovers.
Asa Bales Park offers a day in the park for the whole family.
The Arctic Zone is a state of the art ice skating rink that offers lessons and hockey training courses.
The Indiana Soccer Academy is a soccer training facility that's open year round, and the Roundtripper Baseball Academy is an excellent resource for sluggers everywhere.
The Wood Wind Golf Course has hosted several professional tournaments, while the Bridgewater Club is a resort golfing community with driving ranges, putting greens, and a comprehensive clubhouse.
The Monon Trail branches through Westfield, taking bikers, hikers and inline skaters through some beautiful Central Indiana countryside enroute to Indianapolis or Carmel.
The Westfield-Washington Historical Society and Museum is a history buff's dream-come-true, with exhibits on Westfield's Underground Railroad, antique photographs, and other relics from Westfield's Quaker past.
There are a number of events and fairs that make living in Westfield fun any time of the year. One of the major celebrations in this Central Indiana town is the Westfield Rocks the Fourth event, a Fourth of July party that takes place at Asa Bales Park. The Independence Day fair features the Headliners Car Show, a Charity Motorcycle Ride, live music from around the region, an area for Westfield children, plenty of vendors from area businesses and restaurants, and, of course, fireworks. The Westfield Farmers Market is another big draw to the area, bringing fresh produce and goods to the streets of downtown Westfield, near City Hall. Another fun, unique event in Westfield is the Grand Junction Derby, featuring gravity powered, homemade derby cars.
Located in Hamilton County (its exact coordinates are 40°1?56?N 86°7?44?W), Westfield has a total area of 7.6 square miles, 7.6 square miles of which is land and 0.13% of which is water.
Because of its status as an Indiana city (it's actually the newest Indiana city, incorporated in 2008), Westfield features the typical form of government for its class: a mayor, a city council, and a clerk-treasurer.
Founded on May 6, 1834 by a group of North Carolina Quakers that included Asa Bales, Simon Moon, Simon Barker, and Ambrose Osborne (several of which now have Westfield parks named after them), Westfield is purported to have been planned as a stop on the Underground Railroad, thanks to the work of the Religious Society of Friends and the Wesleyan Methodist Church. The city was officially incorporated in 2008, making it the youngest Indiana city.
Because of its relatively small size, not too many celebrities and historical figures have come from Westfield, Indiana. However, there are two Westfield residents who have held places in United States history: Claude Bowers and Herbert Baumeister. Claude Bowers was the American ambassador to Spain and Chile; at one point he ran for the House of Representatives. In his lifetime, Claude Bowers penned fourteen books, many of them concerning the life of Thomas Jefferson. Herbert Baumeister, aka Brian Smart, is a lot more infamous. A diagnosed schizophrenic, Baumeister murdered somewhere between 11 and 20 gay men, burning the flesh from their bodies before partially burying them in his backyard; he eventually committed suicide.
