Every year, thousands of people search for the perfect winter getaway location and find themselves visiting and coming back to Winter Park, Colorado. World renowned for its skiing popularity, Winter Park lodging brings favorable boarding and hospitality that is second to none. All in the shadow of the spectacular Rocky Mountains, Winter Park offers various winter activities as well as many other fun-filled events throughout the year.
Widely known as “Colorado’s Highest,” the cozy mountain village boasts the highest elevation of any incorporated town in the United States resting at 12,060 feet above sea level. From meager beginnings as a settlement during the construction of the Moffat Tunnel, Winter Park gained steam in the twenties when a local valley merchant began initial development. “Doc” Graves recognized the site for its sheer beauty and constructed 26 tourist cabins, a café and service station – all powered by a water wheel he installed at the nearby Vasquez Creek. Despite the ominous Great Depression, Graves and his settlement experienced some economic prosperity and in 1939, the Winter Park Ski Resort first opened its doors to visitors. Composed of three interconnected peaks – Winter Park, Mary Jane and Vasquez Ridge – Winter Park soon gained a reputation as being a premiere winter vacation destination. Despite so much success, the village wasn’t officially founded until August 1, 1978.
As the town evolved, Winter Park soon turned into what is now a year-round attraction. Many come in summer months to enjoy the beauty of the mountains by exploring miles of hiking trails or meandering though numerous mountain bike paths. Many outdoor enthusiasts wade through the crystal clear mountain streams in search of catching that trophy rainbow trout on their fly rod while others take in a guided horseback ride. The town center has much to offer as well in the way of its unique specialty shops. Many window shoppers find various hidden treasures in the realm of one-of-a-kind, handcrafted southwestern jewelry or Native American artwork. Different events and festivals are also hosted year-round including the Annual Snow Mountain Disc Golf tournament.
With so much to offer throughout the calendar year, it’s no wonder Winter Park is such a popular attraction. From ski slopes to shopping, this cozy mountain town is the perfect getaway from the hustle and congestion of the city. Winter Park lodging is always accommodating and service is second to none. Everyone should be able to be able to experience the rest and relaxation that others enjoy in Winter Park, Colorado.
