Return to "Homes for Sale in Indianapolis Historic Districts"
Chatham Arch is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Indianapolis, containing many of the area's historic homes. Located in the northeast quadrant of downtown, the community boasts a collection of Civil War era workers' cottages on Arch, St. Clair, and 9th Streets. Only a few pockets of these early cottages survive in the area.
The northern portion of Chatham Arch hosts an unusual mix of architecture. Here you'll find traditional middle-class homes, duplexes, apartments, and flats, as well as commercial buildings. A sprinkling of oppulent, turn-of-the-century homes also can be found here.
Massachusetts Avenue is the primary commercial district, and exhibits several fine post-Civil War and early twentieth century commercial buildings, icluding the Real Silk Hosiery Mills complex, formerly home of one of the country's main silk hosiery factories. The library at the Indiana Historical Society has a collection of Sanborn fire insurance maps from the 1800s which show the original street names and structures in Chatham Arch.
The neighborhood's namesake, "The Arch At Chatham" was originally built in 1890, and was previously known as "St. Joseph's Hall." Restored by its owners, and renamed, serves as an intimate yet cosmopolitan atmosphere for any occasion.
