Forest Hills snuggles up to the southern border of Broad Ripple Village where North College Avenue meets Kessler. The neighborhood boasts a unique and impressive assortment of architectural styles in a great location that allows easy access to parks and trails, and a short drive to Downtown and Castleton. The Monon Trail defines the neighborhood's easternmost border.
The picturesque community is known for its mature trees, winding streets, and early 20th-century homes. Brick piers guard the major entrances to the district, and historic street lamps line the boulevards.
The community became part of Indianapolis in 1922 when landowner Benjamin Stevenson filed a plat with the small town of Broad Ripple. The Indianapolis city limits were still five blocks south of 56th Street at that time. While Broad-Ripple leaders were considering Stevenson's plans, the City of Indianapolis annexed a vast tract including Broad Ripple — and with it, the area known at the time as "Stevenson's Woods."
Forest Hills is a purely residential neighborhood. You'll only find ONE business amidst its 200+ homes (a veteranary clinic), but shoppers don't despair... it's within easy walking distance of Broad Ripple Village, the Shops of 54th Street, and numerous stores along College Avenue.
Its homes exhibit the beautiful architecture and craftsmanship that blossomed in America between the two World Wars. Here you'll find an eclectic mix of English Cottages, Tudor Revival, French, Mediterranean, Colonial, Cape Cod, and Bungalows, with an abundance of trees, colorful gardens, and borders marked by stately brick and limestone columns.
It's been said that people buy homes in Forest Hills because of the homes themselves, but they stay because of the neighborhood. It's home to the oldest neighborhood event in Indianapolis: its annual Halloween Party. Its Summer Picnic dates back nearly as far.
