For Indianapolis residents, the 500 Festival Carb Day is one of the most eagerly anticipated days of the Spring season. When it’s May in the Circle City, downtown Indianapolis is ready to celebrate the greatest spectacle in racing, the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race (Indy 500). As far as sporting events in Indianapolis go, this is the event to end all events and takes place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway each year on Memorial Day weekend. A number of festivities lead up to the big day, including Carb Day, which takes place the Friday before Memorial Day every year, with the race following closely behind on Sunday.

Only one in a plethora of events designed to celebrate the success of the Indy 500, Carb Day is one of the most rowdy, with fans arriving early on Friday to fill the bleachers. The main activity of the day is watching practice for Qualifying, where the drivers race around the track in an attempt to land one of the coveted 33 spots for the Indianapolis 500 mile race. Gates are open from 8:00am-6:00pm, and those who aren’t that interested in watching the drivers practice can still work on their tans. Those fans who arrive bright and early on Carb Day, coolers, suntan lotion, and snacks in hand, are ready to have a good time.

Having a good time is plenty easy to do during the month of May in Indy. Besides Carb Day, many of the other events leading up to the day of the race involve fun in the sun for all Indy residents, including the activities the Indianapolis 500 Festival has set up, such as Indianapolis Kids Day, Indianapolis Community Day, and the Indianapolis Victory Circle Celebration. Memorial Day weekend is particularly packed with celebratory events, including the biggest half-marathon in the world, the Indianapolis Mini-Marathon, and the colorful, televised Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade, both of which take place on Saturday, following the 500 Festival Carb Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday.

Carb Day involves not only enthusiastic fans cheering on their favorite drivers, but also Indianapolis music lovers who are delighted to get the chance to watch a popular national musical act and get into the racing spirit all at the same time. The act for 2009 was 3 Doors Down, a band whose loyal fans in Indy swarmed to see. For those who might want to get out of the sun for a bit, another great activity you can take part in on Carb Day is brushing up on your Indianapolis history and visiting the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum, located right next to the track. So racing fans, when May rolls around, be sure to get your tickets to Miller Lite Carb Day and prepare for a day of celebrating Indy’s biggest sporting event and checking out all that Speedway, Indiana, has to offer!
