The Indianapolis based Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center is a premier arts education and performance facility, located at the entrance to the University of Indianapolis, about 4.2 miles from downtown Indianapolis. Inside its multi-storied walls, some serious creativity goes on every day and night, year-round.
The concert hall is created on a Viennese performance venue pattern, harkening back to the great performing centers of Europe. It features showcases of talented faculty, student and non-university musicians, dancers, writers and fine artists of all kinds, and is an important mecca for the Indianapolis art community in general. The space, called the Ruth Lilly Performance Hall, seats 500 in auditorium style, with two tiers of balconies. Ruth Lilly is a scion of the Lilly family, famous for generations of philanthropy and as the founders of Eli Lilly and Company, one of the most powerful pharmaceutical companies in the world.
The Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center Gallery, next door to the Ruth Lilly Performance Hall, hosts rotating art shows featuring the work of well known local and regional artists, as well as juried competitions. This space is also serious about the arts, utilitarian, roomy and practical, designed to direct attention to the pieces of art on display, and to the Indianapolis artists who create them. Among the many fine venues for Indianapolis art shows, this is considered one of the best.
The Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center honors a businesswoman who was a patron of the Indianapolis arts and a community leader whose financial donation made the center possible. Today, the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center is a primary Indianapolis performing arts venue that has hosted some of the finest Indianapolis music groups, including the Capital City Chorus all-female show choir, the Indianapolis Brass Choir and the Ensemble Music Society.
