The Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis is a graduate level Indianapolis art school inside Indianapolis University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), near downtown Indianapolis. This school, with an enrollment of some 900 students and over 70 instructors, has received national recognition on numerous occasions and is one of the most respected art academies of its type in America.
Housed in a historic museum building and the 1929 Herron Main Building, Herron occupies only the second such art academy built in the United States. The school has had a wide-ranging impact on not only its students, but the whole Indianapolis arts community. The long standing collection of art at the Herron Museum, for example, eventually became the core of the Indianapolis Museum of Artin 1970 upon its separation from the Herron School of Art and Design in 1970.
Herron School of Art and Design has a long and convoluted 75 year history. This Indianapolis school merged with the University of Indianapolis in 1967; in 1969 Herron became the art and design school for IUPUI. In 2005, the school was able to expand by opening a facility for sculpture and ceramics, and in 2005, Eskenazi Hall became a reality; this new expansion effectively tripled the available space in the academy.
The Herron School of Art and Designis a pillar of Indianapolis education that offers a full range of course studies to complete undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as elective courses. Undergraduate Bachelor of Art degrees are offered in: Art Education, Art History, Ceramics, Furniture Design, General Fine Arts, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture and Visual Communication Design.
Graduate programs offered at the Herron School of Art and Design include Academic Programs, Art Education, visual Art and Visual Communications. Graduate students can chose from three different degree offerings: Master of Art Education, Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture, Furniture Design or Printmaking and Master of Fine Arts in Visual Communication.
In a nationwide ranking of similar fine arts programs, Herron School of Art and Design’s Master of Fine Arts in Visual Art program made it all the way to number 45, ahead of similar programs at facilities like Cornell University, Northwestern University, the University of Chicago and the New York Academy of Art.
The Herron School of Art and Design has grown to be a community conscious school, with several sophisticated outreach programs, such as their youth and adult classes, “Visiting Artists” lecture series, the Basile Center, and the Herron Galleries, a magnet for Indianapolis cultureth at presents fascinating exhibits all year long.
Indianapolis artists and artists-to-be of all ages and all skill levels are welcomed with open arms for Herron’s Saturday School. A large variety of topics on the arts are covered, including graphic design, drawing, comic design, painting and ceramics.
During its years of instructing generations of students in the arts, the academy has had an opportunity to crank out a vast number of highly trained artists. Today, holding a degree from this institution represents instant credibility and respect in the Indianapolis art community and all over the nation.
