Voted “Best Italian” in Indianapolis by AOL’s 2005 City Guide, Iaria’s Italian Restaurant lives up to its reputation and holds its own among the onslaught of chain restaurants in Indianapolis. Since 1933, Iaria’s has been serving up traditional Italian fare with its own flair and tradition that patrons look forward to and expect at each return visit to the quaint downtown Indianapolis eatery.
If you arrive and the spicy, heady scents floating from the kitchen are enough to make you instantly famished, no need to wait for the main course-order a steaming cup of minestrone soup or a generous antipasto salad. The appetizer selection is varied and equally appealing, featuring, among other tasty delicacies, the Italian must-have breaded calamari and the Sicilian specialty “Crostini with Caponata,” made up of an appetizing mix of fresh eggplant, capers, tomatoes and olives served alongside thick toasted crostini bread.
The dinner menu at Iaria’s Italian Restaurant is enough to whet any appetite with its wide variety of hearty customary Italian dishes such as creamy fettuccini with homemade clam sauce and seafood pasta with sautéed shrimp, mussles and clams swimming in a light basil cream paste. They also serve chicken or, for the adventurous connoisseur, veal parmesan coated in a sweetly spicy marsala wine marinade.
While the food might not be as quick as what you’ll find at the Indianapolis Italian Street Festival, it is just as authentic. The children’s menu is just as impressive as the full menu, which makes this one of the best restaurants for kids in Indianapolis. Be sure to save room for some of the traditional spumoni ice cream or homemade espresso-soaked tiramisu. And what traditional Italian dinner experience is complete without a cup of strong, steaming espresso to cap off your meal?
If you’re in a chain restaurant rut and looking for something richer to give your taste buds a much-needed and pleasant awakening, head to Iaria’s Italian Restaurant for dinner or lunch and you may just give up your usual on-the-go Italian restaurant for good.
