Indiana University – Purdue University (IUPUI): Jaguars Take a Bite Out of Indianapolis Education

Indiana University – Purdue University (IUPUI), located in downtown Indianapolis, is an Indianapolis college that is a partnership between Indiana University and Purdue University.  Academic programs, including Associates, Bachelors and Masters studies, are offered there through both universities.  Divisions of the Indiana University School of Law, Indiana University School of Medicine, IU Kelly School of Business, IU School of Nursing and IU School of Dentistry also are located on campus.  IUPUI provides post-secondary and post-graduate courses of academia pursued by all ages of students, including local employees of the city.

IUPUI is considered to be Indiana’s urban location for research and health sciences education.  Several local employers offer tuition assistance to the school in order to encourage continuing studies to residents of Indianapolis.  The university’s mission is to “advance the State of Indiana and the intellectual growth of its citizens to the highest levels nationally and internationally through research and creative activity, teaching and learning, and civic engagement.”  IUPUI receives significant support and funding from Indianapolis businesses with an interest in the advancement of their programs, including Eli Lilly and Company.

Indiana University – Purdue University‘s vision is to be considered one of the highest-ranking urban universities, and to be recognized on a local, national and international level for its many achievements.  The Indiana college currently ranks among the top fifteen in the United States for first professional degrees awarded, and within the top seven for health-related degrees.  More than 200 academic programs are available to its 29,000 students from 49 states and 122 countries.

Alumni of IUPUI comprise 85% of Indiana’s dentists, 50% of doctors, nearly 50% of attorneys and more than a third of the state’s nurses.  In addition, a large percentage of the state’s health and rehabilitation sciences and social work professionals study there.

The campus is located three blocks west of the Indiana State Capitol, four blocks north of Victory Field and Lucas Oil Stadium, and directly next to the White River State Park.  Also located adjacent to IUPUI are the NCAA National Headquarters, the Indiana State Museum, the Indianapolis Zoo and the Eiteljorg Museum.  IUPUI student housing facilities can accommodate up to 1,060 students through traditional residence halls and newly built apartments on the Indianapolis River Walk.

Visitors typically schedule campus visits on a personal or group basis.  The many professional academic buildings and sporting venues such as Kuntz Stadium, the IU Natatorium, National Institute of Fitness and Sports and The Jungle may be included in any scheduled tour.  IUPUI’s state-of-the-art University Library and campus housing are also available for tours.  JagDays are the university’s one-day campus events designed to advise and educate on specific courses of study, navigating campus locations, and lifestyle involved in living in downtown Indianapolis.  If your interest is strictly academic in nature, you may also schedule a one-on-one meeting with one of the many Enrollment Representatives to advise you on admissions processes, scholarships and financial aid.

IUPUI’s most recent addition to campus is the Student Campus Center, located on the southwest corner of University Boulevard and Michigan Avenue.  The modern architectural design allows refreshing daylight to flood the main lobby and mall area through many windows and glass walls.  The center includes university registrar and bursar offices, as well as a bookstore and coffee shop for casual and business meetings.

The university offers its student athletes a complete list of Indianapolis sports teams.  Men’s and women’s swimming and diving, soccer, tennis, cross country and track, basketball and golf, as well as women’s IUPUI volleyball and IUPUI softball teams are constantly recruiting promising national and international athletes.  The school’s nickname is The Jaguars, or The Jags, and their colors are red, black and gold.

IUPUI values student learning, high standards of teaching and scholarship, and high standards of service to its students and faculty.  The university recognizes that students are a valued partner in learning, rather than simply the subject.  IUPUI staff and students are also widely known for their service and vested interest in local community affairs and contributions to Indianapolis non-profit organizations.

Through providing nationally recognized Indianapolis education, IUPUI has played an integral part in offering expert care to patients, as well as expanding research fields in every discipline.  IUPUI values “collegiality, cooperation, creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship as well as honesty, integrity, and support” within the organization.

Indiana University-Purdue University, with its strong connection to Indianapolis development and innovative expansion, prides itself on pursuing a diverse community of staff and students.  It recently was named the recipient of a $1 million grant to improve minority student success in college science programs.

Among the other schools available through the Indianapolis campus are the IU Herron School of Art and Design, IU School of Education, Purdue School of Engineering & Technology, IU School of Informatics, and IU School of Journalism. Local, national and international students appreciate the diverse options to pursue different degrees through multiple universities and schools to fit their individual goals.
