National Institute for Fitness and Sports

The National Institute for Fitness and Sport (NIFS) is located at 250 University Boulevard in downtown Indianapolis, on Indiana University – Purdue University (IUPUI)’s campus. The non-profit facility opened its Indy doors in 1988 to serve thousands of members in its 117,000-square-foot Institute and Fitness Center.

All 14 IUPUI sports teams use the facilities for training purposes alongside the National Institute for Fitness and Sport training staff. The 200-meter indoor track, free weights, Cybex and cardio equipment are available for research and member use. Regulation full and half-size basketball courts, indoor batting nets and a state-of-the-art pilates studio are also provided for athletic training purposes. IUPUI team members also frequently use the auditorium, classroom, and boardroom for team and coach meetings.

Other amenities available to members at NIFS include locker rooms, hot tubs, saunas and shower facilities. The NIKE All-America Basketball Camp was formerly held there, and it is currently the site of NFL Combine workouts, indoor track meets, NBA team workouts and corporate and educational classes, making it a true proving ground for Indianapolis sports.

Many visitors to the area are interested to learn that NIFS is the preferred training facility for local and traveling professional sports teams. The Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Fever, Indianapolis Indians, Indiana Invaders and Indianapolis Racing League all train at this location year-round. The on-site facilities also house office space for the IUPUI Athletics Administration and the Indiana University Hospital, also known as the IU Medical Center.

Several Indianapolis businesses offer exclusive memberships to NIFS to their employee base, following the state’s initiative to become healthier and increase general fitness levels. National recognition has been given to the research and trials performed by trainers and on-site medical staff in numerous journals and other publications. Educational and certification programs attract national audiences at the IU building, and electronic services offered are utilized by companies in 18 North American states. NIFS’s Corporate Fitness Management Department has also overseen and managed 30 on-site fitness centers in several states across the country.

The National Institute for Fitness and Sport is an independent organization that leases its housing facilities from Indiana University. Significant funding sources have included the Lilly Endowment Fund, the State of Indiana, and the City of Indianapolis. Grants, federal and state loans, and membership fees fund the daily operations and improvements to the Institute. The current mission of NIFS states that it is “dedicated to enhancing human health, physical fitness and athletic performance through research, education and service for people of all ages and abilities.”
